Southern Africa

"Africa" says a lot of different things to different people, some think of deserts, others may think of adverse poverty but what most people think of is its abundant wildlife. Africa’s main attraction is definitely the animals.

Elephants

Southern Africa is no exception to this and in fact, the habitat diversities remain un-matched throughout the continent. From the wooded savannah’s of Kruger National Park to the countless waterways of Northern Botswana to the very dry, arid system of Etosha in Namibia. These areas play host to vast quantities of wildlife. South Africa is however not all about wildlife, it’s a country equal in size to the combined states of Texas and California in the USA, where nearly 800 miles of sun soaked beach is washed by both the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Majestic Mountains are never out of reach, no matter where you are, even if you find your self in an apparent semi-desert region.

So, from manicured farmlands through beautiful mountains, along unspoiled beaches through to wild, game rich savannah’s and not to forget our beautiful semi desert of the Karoo, we have a bit of something for everyone, and what’s more, a year round destination where our winters are mild and summers are long and warm.

Johannesburg City

The country is made up of just over 40 million people with a rich cultural diversity comprising of 11 official languages. Most people are tribal where many still live out their daily lives in rural villages, keeping customs and traditions alive.

However, we are a country of the times and our cities are big and modern. Johannesburg, with close to 6 million inhabitants, is the financial centre of the country. It’s big and busy, the gateway to the finest of attractions but still manages to retain a certain amount of charm. The shopping is great and the hotels are amongst the finest on offer.

Cape Town on the other hand is special. Ranked as one of the top 5 most desirable cities of the world today. The mother city of South Africa, nestles in a most dramatic setting with Table mountain as backdrop and Devils peak and Lions head on either side with the blue waters of the Atlantic ocean out in front. Few cities in the world can boast such a spectacular location. Cape Town has so much to offer with so much right on its doorstep. The fabulous wines of South Africa originate from this region and still today produce exceptional quality and a visit to the Cape is incomplete without a visit to the winelands. Table Mountain Cable CarWhether you take a cable car to the top of Table Mountain or drive round the peninsula to the Cape of Good Hope, an awe-inspiring experience will be had by all. Cape Town may also serve as the gateway to the South Eastern and Eastern Cape coast. Dominated by the Garden Route. This section of coast, so named for its sheer beauty and diversity, has some of the most spectacular scenery on offer. Bays, beaches, cliffs and rocky capes are all strung together by a long line of pounding white surf. With mountain ranges crowding in, they create a narrow, well watered coastal terrace covered with dense trees and flowering plants. Towns and villages are situated along this stretch of coast offering some fine accommodation in smaller hotels and guest houses.

Zulu Warrior

Durban, situated on the East coast, is the gateway to the Zulu Kingdom. The city enjoys a wonderful warm climate year round where the beaches are washed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Durban is within easy reach of the majestic Drakensberg Mountains, the ‘roof of Southern Africa’. This is the most dominant range of mountains in the country running along the western boundary of the Kwazulu Natal region, over 100 miles in length with an average elevation of 9000 ft and peaks climbing through to over 12 000ft. Still home to many tribal clans as well as a variety of birds and animals.

Crossing eastwards towards the coast, 4 million Zulus inhabit these lands. Here, blood stained battlefields tell the tales of the struggles they endured to secure these parts from the British settlers of the 19 century. The region is rich in culture as well as wildlife with some fine establishments to brag about.

Further north one finds the small, landlocked Kingdom of Swaziland, one of Africa. Although just a small country, Swaziland has much to offer, wide open spaces dotted with small villages which have remained unchanged for hundreds of years. Mountains dominate the north and the country has a fair share of wildlife sanctuaries, including a couple of ‘big five’ reserves. Kruger National Park, undoubtedly one of the most supreme national parks in the world today, requires very little introduction . An area in excess of 4 million acres with well over 1 million animals, Kruger remains un challenged as far as diversities are concerned. Bordering Kruger Park lie a string of privately owned reserves, all complete with exclusive lodges and services. Most will guarantee sightings of the big 5 while out on safari in open landrovers, in the company of experienced rangers. Blyde River Canyon The escarpment of the eastern Mpumalanga region boasts fantastic panorama’s from Gods Window through to the spectacular Blyde River Canyon, listed as the third largest canyon in the world. Numerous waterfalls with easy access, provide an added interest to the whole area.

We have just mentioned a few of the highlights, many more abound with hosts of different activities. Whether you choose to sit in the comfort of a luxury coach or be racing through the rapids of a river, South Africa is an ideal destination with something for every taste.

Great weather, great touring, fantastic safaris, beautiful golf courses, wonderful people, year round destination;
