Zambia and Victoria Falls

"A sight as glorious as this, only angels in flight have gazed upon till now." These were the words from legendary missionary and explorer, David Livingstone when he first discovered the Victoria Falls in 1855.

Situated on the mighty Zambezi River, the Victoria Falls are an awesome sight to witness. The Zambezi is the 4th longest river in Africa. With its source in the north western part of Zambia, it flows out into Angola before re-entering Zambia. Its flow, on the whole, is slow and lazy but speeds up as it passes over the Gonye falls up stream. In peak wet season (February to May) more water drops over the falls than an average city with 5 million occupants will use in a year.

The local name for the falls is ‘Mosi Au Tunya’ – the smoke that thunders. Spray from the gorge can be seen from miles away and when close enough, the tremendous roar of the falling waters can be overwhelming. The Victoria falls are one of the seven natural wonders of the world and have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
